During my last trip to Grafton, I had a chat with a local. He was asking me about my whereabouts. I told him that I just came from Armidale and had a stopover in Dorrigo (Bellingen Shire), cycled to Nymboida and was on my way back to Ocean Shores (Byron Shire). On my bicycle.
He needed some time to digest my words and his huge bite that he took from his sausage roll with tomato sauce. An odd choice, since Prince Bakery is particularly famous for its Banh Mi – one of them I had almost incorporated already, the other one was “for da road”.
Anyways, we continued chatting early morning, until he started telling me about the Summerland Way. I got curious. Back in the day, he used to travel a lot, since he used to work for Telstra and had put up many towers all over NSW. Now, I am doing my research about a possible next cycling adventure across Northern Rivers.
Stretching 199 kilometers through the stunning landscapes of New South Wales, Summerland Way (B91) offers a scenic and relaxed alternative to the Pacific Highway. This fully sealed route runs north from Grafton to the Queensland border, just west of Mount Lindesay, where it connects with Mount Lindesay Highway.
Named after the Summerland region, a favorite holiday destination, this road takes travelers through picturesque countryside, lush rainforests, and charming rural towns. While the road is well-maintained, sections north of the Lions Road turn-off can be narrow and winding, adding a touch of adventure to the journey.
Whether you’re heading north for a scenic drive or looking for a quieter route between New South Wales and Queensland, Summerland Way offers a beautiful, less-traveled alternative.
So far, so good. I haven´t been to this part of Northern Rivers yet, and to start with, I am probably going to a loop to Woodenbong via Kyogle, then back home to Ocean Shores – yet another multi-day tour, most likely with a stop in Woodenbong (Kyogle Shire).
I believe that I am going to cycle the Summerland Way within this year, still. It will be part of my preparation for Ultraman Australia in May 2026. I am pretty sure that I am going to discover many other amazing parts of Northern Rivers and neighbouring regions along the way.
